Membership
As a mutual insurance company, the members are the policy holders and owners of Central Pennsylvania Physicians. Under the Bylaws, membership in the Group is limited to licensed physicians, podiatrists, dentists and other healthcare providers having the location of their practice in Central Pennsylvania. Central Pennsylvania Physicians is focused solely on insuring physicians and their practices. There are no stockholders or owners of the Group other than policyholders.
Business Strategy
Central Pennsylvania Physicians is providing a stable source of professional liability insurance to our members. Over the long term, we also will seek to reduce the cost of providing this insurance to our members. Our strategy for achieving these goals is based upon the following:
- Geographic Focus – Central Pennsylvania Physicians members all practice in the limited geographic area of South Central Pennsylvania. The comparatively conservative social and judicial climate in this region will contribute to loss results that will be better than other regions in Pennsylvania.
- Physician Ownership – Central Pennsylvania Physicians is physician owned. The profits benefit the members.
- Investment in Quality - Our goal is not to provide a financial return to third-party stockholders or investors. We can and do invest money in loss control and educational efforts that benefit our members.
- Physician Control - The Board of Directors is composed principally of member physicians. The active involvement of practicing physicians on our Board of Directors allows us to focus on medical practice patterns and concerns, root causes of claims, patient/customer needs, and other relevant matters. It also ensures that we are accountable to our member-physicians.
- Maintain Underwriting Discipline – Central Pennsylvania Physicians have specific criteria a physician must meet in order to be insured by the Group. Those standards will be continually enhanced.
- Maintain Loss Control Efforts – Central Pennsylvania Physicians employs an aggressive loss control program to assist physicians in quality assurance, claims prevention (also known as “event management”) and in minimizing actual claims.
